Cameron Diaz's Bad Day starts with a pinky promise

Joy needs to withdraw $30. Instead, her bank account freezes, the manager confiscates her card, and the tellers decide they're being robbed. Cameron Diaz's character hasn't set out to become a fugitive. She's just promised to make it to her daughter's soccer game.
That's the escalating predicament in Netflix's trailer for Bad Day, which drew nearly 700,000 views in its first 13 hours, an unusually fast start for the channel's short uploads. The comment section is already far busier than its usual full first day, too.
Diaz plays a single mother whose small commitment meets an increasingly unreasonable obstacle course. A parking boot is only the beginning. At a clinic, she accidentally knocks a television into a fish tank; later, an electric scooter takes her onto a highway. Soon police are pursuing a woman whose original ambition was simply to turn up on time.
Danielle Brooks supplies a useful distinction: "She's a criminal. I didn't say she was good at it." The cast also includes Ed O'Neill, Ben Schwartz, John Higgins, Jessica Belkin and Ayden Mayeri.
Viewers are connecting Diaz's physical comedy to Bad Teacher and recalling The Holiday, while O'Neill's appearance has prompted recognition of Modern Family's Jay Pritchett. Others are concentrating on the smaller indignities, particularly the bank's card reader, rather than the vehicular chaos.
Written by Laura Solon and directed by Jake Szymanski, Bad Day arrives on Netflix December 11. Joy's promise is modest. The route to keeping it involves commandeering a bus.
