Why does a doctor want the hunchback found so urgently? In Netflix's trailer for The Hunchback, Soul of Paris, he believes the hunted man is immune to cholera, and wants to experiment on him. Victor Hugo confronts him over treating a human being as material for medical history.

That puts a sinister pursuit at the center of this reimagining. Rather than simply retelling Hugo's novel, the film imagines a hunchbacked stonemason whose life inspires the writer's famous character. Cassel stars, while Hugo himself appears as a character determined to write about oppressed people.

The trailer's Paris is a city of stone quarries, armed searches and barricades. A dancer draws the stonemason's affection, revolutionary crowds demand a republic, and church officials urge him to surrender. The danger comes from people who see his body as something they can claim.

The trailer reached roughly 680,000 views in twelve hours, well ahead of Netflix's usual start for uploads this length. In the comments, viewers bring memories of Disney's animated adaptation, including its music and the familiar cry of sanctuary, to this very different treatment.

The film comes from Jean-François Richet, director of Mesrine and Plane. Its closing card announces a November 27 Netflix release.
