"You mean to alarm me, Mr. Darcy, by observing me so closely?" Elizabeth Bennet asks at the piano. Emma Corrin's Elizabeth has noticed Jack Lowden's scrutiny, and Netflix's Pride and Prejudice trailer gives her plenty of opportunity to answer it.
The preview moves between the crowded Bennet household, country dances and uncomfortable encounters, with Olivia Colman's Mrs. Bennet urgently calling for her husband when news of a wealthy bachelor arrives. Mr. Collins contributes an awkward formal appearance of his own. Marriage is everyone's business here, whether Elizabeth welcomes the attention or not.
Written for the screen by Dolly Alderton, the six-part adaptation premieres December 3. Its opening exchange gives the courtship comedy a practical edge: Elizabeth considers the narrow futures available to her, contrasting life as a governess and spinster with becoming a wife and mother.
The trailer has drawn more than 600,000 views in roughly half a day, running well ahead of Netflix's usual start for uploads of this length. The comments are even more unusually busy: already more than twenty times the channel's typical full-day total for its short uploads.
Much of that conversation is about the pleasure, and difficulty, of meeting these characters again. Viewers welcome the room a series gives Austen's story, discuss the casting of Mr. Collins and return to earlier Elizabeths and Darcys. The 1995 series starred Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth; the 2005 film paired Keira Knightley with Matthew Macfadyen.
For this version, the trailer leaves room for domestic comedy alongside the longing. Colman's Mrs. Bennet gets a pointed question of her own: "Why must you always make everything so dramatic, Mr. Bennet?"

I'm so happy this is a series, not a movie! Trying to cover the entire story in one movie leaves out so much good stuff.
