The Mosquito Bowl | Red Band Trailer | Netflix

A soldier calls it the "white buzz": a sensation he remembers from childhood, then from playing football. In The Mosquito Bowl's red band trailer, that same feeling accompanies explosions, flamethrowers and a beach landing under fire.

The connection gives Netflix's trailer its central thread. Rather than simply introducing a team and sending it to war, the edit moves between the football field and combat, tracing a familiar rush into something far more frightening. The red band label is worth noting: this trailer includes graphic battlefield injuries and strong language.

Directed by Peter Berg, the drama tells the true story of college football stars who enlisted in the Marines after Pearl Harbor. Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis lead the cast. For Berg, whose films include Friday Night Lights and Lone Survivor, it brings the football field and the military setting into the same story.

The trailer drew nearly half a million views in ten hours, a substantially faster start than Netflix's usual short uploads. It arrives amid several unusually busy releases on the channel, including the alien-comedy trailer Allen and the KPop Demon Hunters choreography videos.

Here, though, the emphasis is on the distance between athletic promise and wartime experience. A glimpse of soldiers swimming at a beach gives way to an amphibious assault; later, an officer tries to reach a stunned soldier through the gunfire. The film opens in theaters October 30.
