A fuel selector between OFF and LEFT MAIN: Pilot Debrief on the John C. Tune crash
The week's single upload walks through the NTSB report on a March 2024 night approach into Nashville that ended two miles short of the runway, killing a family of five.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Pilot's Deadly Mistakes Get Wife & Children Killed!
"Pilot's Deadly Mistakes Get Wife & Children Killed!" was the only new video on Pilot Debrief this week, and it passed a million views. Hoover, the retired F-15E pilot who now flies for a major US airline, spent it on a Piper Turbo Lance that came home from Ontario to John C. Tune Airport near Nashville on a March night in 2024, with a private pilot, his wife and their three children aboard.
The approach never stabilized. The pilot overflew the field to come around again, the engine popped and went quiet, and the airplane came down beside an interstate south of the airport. The NTSB found no mechanical fault. The fuel selector sat between OFF and LEFT MAIN, and the first line of the approach checklist reads "Fuel Selector, Proper Tank."
Viewers keep returning to the controller's voice on the recording, urging the pilot to keep flying the airplane, and to the question of flying small airplanes at night at all. Several write from West Nashville, where they pass the crash site often.
The older debriefs stayed busy too. The Nelons episode, four weeks old, is past four million views, and a clip of Dave Rowe's Hell's Canyon crash keeps drawing a steady crowd. The channel ran a little above its usual daily pace and added about 10,000 subscribers. Among aviation and machines channels near its size, only Dorothy Lech drew more views over the seven days, while Captain Steeeve had a far busier week than usual.
