Blocking further transfers is the focus of the FBI's response to a major cryptocurrency theft from Binance, according to Japan's Nippon Television News (日テレNEWS). The broadcaster says investigators have published related cryptocurrency addresses and asked exchanges and service providers to block transactions.
The short report says a Binance employee's computer was hacked on October 29, leading to the theft of assets worth about $6.3 billion. Binance is an international exchange where users trade cryptocurrencies.
According to the broadcaster, the FBI announced on October 31 that the North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor was responsible. The report attributes that identification to the U.S. agency, rather than presenting an independent finding.
Investigators had confirmed that the hackers were converting stolen holdings into other cryptocurrencies, the report says. The FBI expected further conversions for money laundering, making its request to block transactions an effort to interrupt the movement of the stolen assets.
An international cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2017. It is the largest exchange by daily cryptocurrency trading volume and has no official company headquarters.
