Cellphone video from a Northridge lounge shows partygoers running from gunfire
Annette Arreola's report for Today in LA led a Saturday when NBCLA also carried a mother's account of her son's West Nile illness and Friday's full newscast.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 85,277 views a day, 24 times a normal first day on this channel (3,497).
Video shows partygoers panic after shooting in Northridge
"Video shows partygoers panic after shooting in Northridge" is a short report from NBCLA, the channel of NBC's Los Angeles station. Built around cellphone footage, it shows a party crowd breaking and running as gunshots ring out at an artist's lounge in the San Fernando Valley neighborhood. Annette Arreola reported it for Today in LA on Saturday morning.
Twelve hours after it went up, the clip had close to 60,000 views. A new short on this channel usually finishes its whole first day with a few thousand. The comment section moved faster still: more than 400 comments in half a day, where these shorts usually gather about a dozen. Some viewers ask how the shooter got away from a room that full of people. A man who grew up in Northridge writes about how much the area has changed. Another points to the layout of the building itself, a second-floor corner unit in a strip mall that he says is hard to get out of quickly.
Two other Saturday uploads also ran far past the channel's usual start: a mother describing the first signs of her young son's West Nile infection, beginning with a rash, and the full Friday evening newscast, which led with the October heat wave and with the families of the six people killed in the 2022 Windsor Hills crash, after the driver was found guilty of murder.
The heat has stayed on the channel's schedule since then. Its newest upload covers the Bouquet Fire, which grew past 700 acres northeast of Santa Clarita and brought evacuation orders.
