An open mic night near Cal State Northridge ends with two people dead
ABC7's third report on the strip mall shooting outpaced its first two, on a Saturday when the station also identified the pilot and nurse killed in a helicopter crash off Catalina Island.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 335,606 views a day, 15 times a normal first day on this channel (21,867).
2 dead after shooting at open mic night event near CSUN
What happened at the open mic night near Cal State Northridge? A shooting broke out during the event at a strip mall near the campus, and two people were killed, authorities said.
ABC7, the Disney-owned Los Angeles station, covered the story in three separate uploads. The first, "At least 2 dead after shooting at strip mall near Cal State Northridge," described a large police response. A second carried a bystander's video of the chaos after the gunfire began. The newest report, "2 dead after shooting at open mic night event near CSUN," went furthest. It passed 130,000 views in its first six hours, about six times what a new ABC7 video usually gathers in a whole day.
Its comment section filled just as quickly, with more than six hundred comments in those six hours. Many of them ask the same question: how a night built around people taking turns at a microphone ended in gunfire. Others offer prayers for the families.
It was a heavy weekend for the station. On Saturday it also reported that the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner had identified the pilot and the nurse killed in a helicopter crash off Catalina Island. By Sunday it had moved on to a fast-growing brush fire in the Angeles National Forest, which has forced evacuations near Santa Clarita.
