An Ontario air ambulance with six aboard, four of them Canadian, missing off the U.S. coast
CityNews' short national report drew far more viewers in its first hours than the channel's local stories usually see in a day, and its comments keep asking why the flight was over the Atlantic.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 96,019 views a day, 31 times a normal first day on this channel (3,068).
Ontario air ambulance carrying 6 missing off U.S. coast
CityNews told it in a single line: an air ambulance from Ontario, carrying six people, four of them Canadians, has gone missing off the coast of the United States. Eleven hours after the report went up, it had passed 63,000 views.
That is a different scale from the channel's everyday work. CityNews gathers reports from its newsrooms in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Montreal, Ottawa, Kitchener and Halifax, and a new upload usually ends its first day with about 3,000 views. The rest of its weekend stayed close to that: a record-breaking road hockey tournament for cancer research in Vaughan, a Calgary conference on Alberta's October 19 referendum, and newcomers climbing the Calgary Tower for an immigrant education charity, each in the hundreds or low thousands.
The comments came in quickly. The question asked most often, and argued over in long reply threads, is a practical one: what was an Ontario air ambulance doing over the Atlantic? Several commenters bring up Bermuda, and many others simply write that they hope the six are found safe.
The short report does not say where the flight was headed or who was on board.

The numbers
The report ran far ahead of anything else CityNews posted over the weekend, on a day when the channel as a whole was quieter than usual.
