Palomitas, springmielies and a bowl of popcorn from Mondly by Pearson
The language app's only new short asks viewers what popcorn is called where they live, and one South African reports that English and Afrikaans share a word.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
How Do You Say “Popcorn” in Different Languages? 🍿🌍 #Shorts
On an ordinary day, the official channel of the language app Mondly draws a little over 23,000 views across its catalog. Over the past seven days it ran slightly above that, at around 25,000 a day, even though only one new video went up.
That one was a snack. "How Do You Say “Popcorn” in Different Languages? 🍿🌍 #Shorts" lines up the word around the world, from the Spanish palomitas (little doves, in a literal reading) to the Afrikaans springmielies, roughly "jumping corn." The description ends by asking viewers to share their own word, and the small comment section has started on exactly that: a viewer from South Africa writes that, in practice, English and Afrikaans speakers there say it the same way. The short opened with about 2,500 views on its first day.
The rest of the channel's recent energy comes from late summer. A short that borrows Garrett Graham, the hockey player from Elle Kennedy's Off Campus novels, and sets him to cramming for a German exam is still picking up a trickle of views at nearly two months old, alongside a lesson on six essential Korean verbs. The subscriber count held still at 548,000.
Among the explainer and education channels near its size, Mondly sits mid-table by subscribers and is having a modest week, while EmperorTigerstar runs well above its usual pace and The Rest Is History remains, as ever, the group's busiest corner.
