Is France always blue? EmperorTigerstar's map-color question passes half a million

The week's only upload asks whether any country has a 'correct' color on a map, and the comments turned into a friendly vote, Saudi green and Dutch orange included.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

The Complexity of Colors and CountriesThe Complexity of Colors and Countries

EmperorTigerstar usually animates history year by year, border by border. His one new video this week asks a stranger question: when a map paints a country a color, is there a method to the madness? "The Complexity of Colors and Countries" has passed half a million views in five days, a big start for a channel whose regulars come for wars and empires.

The tags give away part of the answer. Strategy games, from Hearts of Iron to Victoria and Crusader Kings, have taught a generation that some nations simply have a color, and the video takes up the famous oddity of yellow Prussia. The description invites viewers to take a color survey, and they have answered loudly in the comments: Saudi Arabia is green, the Netherlands is orange, the UK is red, and France is blue, ahead of anyone else who might want it. The sharpest thread proposes that old military uniforms explain a lot, and a few sticklers point out that yellow Prussia was patched in a later expansion.

The pull reached the rest of the channel too, with daily views running about half again above their usual pace. Behind the new video, last month's explainer on the map the UN reportedly chose as an "official" world map, built around the Equal Earth projection, still finds steady viewers, as does the Panama entry in his Every Year series.

Among history and explainer channels of a similar size, only The Rest Is History added more views this week, as it does most weeks. Linfamy and Suibhne had a calmer stretch. For a mapmaker, this week's subject could hardly fit better: the map itself.
