Mercury water and a Swedish botanist: Linfamy's syphilis series fills a pause
The two-week-old 'Japan’s TRAUMATIC Attempts to Stop Syphilis' has passed 50,000 views, closing a run of three videos on the disease.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Japan’s TRAUMATIC Attempts to Stop Syphilis
Linfamy, the channel that promises the history and folklore of Japan and is "occasionally funny," posted nothing new over the seven days. The newest video it already had is a serious one: "Japan’s TRAUMATIC Attempts to Stop Syphilis," fourteen days old and the one drawing the most viewers each day.
It is the latest chapter in what has become a small series. Seventy-three days ago came "The Disease That Devastated Japan’s Pleasure Quarters," now past 320,000 views, with a pinned note in its description correcting the characters for Ryūkyūsō, an old Japanese name for the disease. Then "When Russians Forced Japan to Build a Brothel Just for Them," which the description sums up, a little wearily, as "Another syphilis video." The new one asks whether Japan managed to stop the infection at all, and its source list reaches back to Carl Peter Thunberg, the Swedish botanist who came to Japan with the Dutch trading post in the 1770s and, according to one cited study, brought a mercury water treatment with him.
Without a fresh upload, the channel drew fewer views than usual, about 15,000 a day where around 20,000 is normal, and its subscriber count held where it was. Among history and explainer channels of similar size, the big weeks belonged to The Rest Is History and Survive History, with EmperorTigerstar running well above its usual pace. Linfamy sits mid-table by subscribers, with three chapters of a grim medical history waiting for anyone who finds the first.
