Mexican authorities are waiting for the United States to resolve television presenter Inés Gómez Mont's immigration status before the next step in efforts to bring her before Mexican courts, Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos says.
In footage of President Claudia Sheinbaum's morning press conference broadcast by MILENIO, Mexico's news broadcaster, Godoy says U.S. immigration authorities detained Gómez Mont in Florida on October 30. She describes three active arrest warrants issued by Mexican federal judges, covering organized crime, money laundering and tax fraud.
The segment moves from a reporter's questions about the detention and alleged luxury purchases to a recorded statement by Godoy. The attorney general alleges that more than 2.45 billion pesos was diverted from federal penitentiary programs through shell companies. That is the alleged scheme described by prosecutors, not a finding of guilt against Gómez Mont.
Godoy says Mexico formally requested Gómez Mont's provisional arrest for extradition in September 2025. Her detention by immigration authorities and Mexico's extradition request are distinct parts of the account: the report does not announce that a transfer to Mexico has been approved or completed.
A second journalist asks Sheinbaum about reports that Gómez Mont sought political asylum on grounds of ideological persecution. The president rejects that characterization, describing the case as involving illicit funds deposited into personal accounts and stressing that the investigation began before her administration.
The video's title, "De Miami a la cárcel: Sheinbaum confirma 3 órdenes de arresto contra Gómez Mont," means "From Miami to prison: Sheinbaum confirms 3 arrest warrants against Gómez Mont." Despite that wording, the proceedings remain unresolved. The prosecutor's statement expressly recognizes Gómez Mont's presumption of innocence and says Mexican courts will determine her responsibility.
