Before leaving the narrow market alleys of Old Damascus, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa asks those gathered around him to look after the elderly shopkeeper he has just visited.

The encounter appears in footage published by United Arab Emirates-based broadcaster Al Mashhad المشهد, which identifies the man as a fabric and upholstery-supplies seller al-Sharaa knew as a child. The short report drew about 475,000 views since yesterday.

Accompanied by security personnel, al-Sharaa walks through the market and enters the shop, where the owner greets him with a handshake and an embrace. The seller says he remembered al-Sharaa as soon as he saw his photograph, despite the years that had passed.

Their conversation turns to familiar details of the premises. Al-Sharaa says he had passed through the area late at night on an earlier occasion and asks whether the shop's press is still the same one. The owner replies that they have not changed.
