Thorns tear an officer's clothes as police search a steep mountainside in darkness. He presses on. After roughly an hour of searching, a faint voice answers their calls.
South Korea's Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) shows the nighttime rescue of an elderly woman lost on Mount Mudeung, near Gwangju in the country's southwest. The report says the emergency call came at about 8 p.m. on October 25, with wind and rain from Typhoon Champi making the search more difficult.
Officers follow the caller's GPS location onto a slope without a path. In body-camera footage supplied by Gwangju police, they push through brambles, calling out to the woman. One officer says they should keep looking because they are nearly there.
When they reach her, the woman thanks them and the officers reassure her. But finding her is only the first part of the rescue: according to the report, she is exhausted and suffering from hypothermia.
Two officers take turns carrying her on their backs down the slippery slope. The descent takes around 40 minutes before they reach a waiting ambulance crew.
In an interview outside his police station, Lieutenant Yang Dong-ho says he approached the search as though he were looking for a member of his own family and did his utmost to the end.
