Morocco is calling for the Western Sahara issue to be withdrawn from the UN Security Council following the reported failure to renew the territory's peacekeeping mission, according to United Arab Emirates-based pan-Arab broadcaster Al Mashhad المشهد.
Reporting from Rabat, correspondent Afaf Bouchikhi describes a royal court statement welcoming the non-renewal of MINURSO's mandate. She says Morocco is demanding that the mission's personnel leave within days, along with its equipment, vehicles and symbols. At the same time, she reports, the statement reaffirms Morocco's commitment to the ceasefire and to protecting what it describes as the country's territorial unity.
The broadcaster attributes the diplomatic impasse to a Russian veto of an American draft resolution. According to its account, the proposal would have reduced the mission's military component and supported Morocco's autonomy plan. An on-screen caption also reports that the council failed to pass both American and Russian proposals.
Western Sahara is a disputed territory in northwestern Africa that the UN lists as non-self-governing. MINURSO was established in 1991 as part of a settlement plan underpinning a ceasefire between Morocco and the Polisario Front. That history makes the mission's future a question about the international framework surrounding the dispute, not simply the departure of peacekeepers.
Bouchikhi says Moroccan political parties have backed the royal court's position and reports celebrations in Laayoune. Her account presents the blocked resolution as an opportunity that Moroccan political actors see to end the mission permanently, rather than as a diplomatic setback.
The video is titled "المغرب يدعو لسحب ملف الصحراء من مجلس الأمن الدولي.. ورحيل القوات الدولية", meaning "Morocco calls for Sahara issue to be withdrawn from UN Security Council and international forces to leave." Its focus is Morocco's response to the reported council impasse.
