Tennessee's prisons chief to resign after Christa Pike's failed execution
LiveNOW from FOX's follow-up on the state's next steps drew more viewers in eight hours than its new videos usually see in a full day, many times over.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,004,683 views a day, 17 times a normal first day on this channel (57,935).
BREAKING: Tennessee prisons chief out after failed execution of Christa Pike
A new video on LiveNOW from FOX usually ends its first day with somewhere around 58,000 views. This one had passed 470,000 within eight hours.
Its subject is a resignation. According to Governor Bill Lee, the head of Tennessee's prison system will leave his post later this month, after this week's failed attempt to execute Christa Pike, the only woman on the state's death row. LiveNOW's Josh Breslow talked through what happens next with Michael Benz of Case Western Reserve University.
The comment section moved even faster than the views. Nearly two thousand comments came in during those first eight hours, where a regular upload here usually gathers about a hundred in a whole day. Much of the discussion is about responsibility: whether the man at the top should be the one to go, or the medical staff and the courts. Many viewers also ask the question in the video's title and tags: what Tennessee can do now, and why, after an attempt to end her life, the effort has turned to keeping her alive. Others point to the many years she has already spent on death row.
The story led a heavy Saturday for the live news channel. A clip of President Trump answering an Iranian official also ran well ahead of a usual start, and his Alabama midterm rally drew a comment section far busier than its views. The day before, the channel had carried Pike's lawyers facing reporters, as we reported here.
