Florida crash expert rejects doubts over co-pilot's age
CBS LA's Nicole Comstock pairs evidence of a possible midair breakup with an aviation expert's defense of Nathalia Filgueiras's qualifications.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 146,567 views a day, 43 times a normal first day on this channel (3,424).
9 people killed in Palm Beach, Florida jet crash
Nathalia Filgueiras was qualified to fly the jet. That is aviation lawyer and former Navy pilot John Gagliano's response to suggestions that the co-pilot's age could explain the fatal Palm Beach County crash.
"I kind of dismiss that. I think that's just, quite honestly, you know, bias, and she was qualified," he says in Nicole Comstock's report for CBS LA. Filgueiras was 20.
The report shifts from the eyewitness account described in our earlier story to the evidence investigators are examining. Nine people died when the Learjet crashed near homes. NTSB board member Tom Chapman says: "We do have some evidence that there was some breakup of the aircraft before impact." That does not establish what caused the crash.
Comstock also includes the co-pilot's emergency transmission reporting an overspeed condition and a rapid descent. Gagliano explains that a loss of engine power alone would leave an aircraft able to glide, rather than account for the steep dive shown here. He points toward structural failure as a possibility, not an official finding.
The report drew about 143,000 views in just under a day, far beyond CBS LA's usual start for regular videos. Comstock closes with the search ahead: investigators may use radar information and wind drift patterns to locate missing aircraft parts along the flight path.
The National Transportation Safety Board is an independent U.S. federal agency that investigates civil transportation accidents, including aviation crashes, and reports its findings.
