Gov. Polis declares disaster emergency for parts of southwest Colorado due to flooding
Kathy Smith lost electricity during the night. By morning, the extent of the flooding at Fun Valley Family Resort was visible: cabins and RVs surrounded by water, with damage across the property.
The resort manager's account gives CBS Colorado's latest flood report a different focus from the stranded residents and helicopter rescues in its earlier coverage. At this South Fork vacation spot, Kathy and fellow manager Mike Smith are confronting another major flood just a year after the previous one.
"Who would have known that we'd have gotten hit twice," Kathy says.
Gov. Jared Polis has declared a disaster emergency covering parts of southwestern Colorado, including Archuleta, Dolores and La Plata counties. Sarah Horbacewicz's report shows washed-out roads and inundated fields, alongside Colorado National Guard footage of helicopter rescues of people and pets. It also reports that some evacuation orders are beginning to lift as the rain slows.
The short report drew more than 120,000 views within 15 hours, far beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for Shorts.
At Fun Valley, the recovery is personal as well as practical. The Smiths say longtime guests have offered to help rebuild, while the managers hope for federal aid. Mike's commitment is direct: "We're invested in this place and we're going to do what it takes to get it back."
