Black Hawk rescues stranded residents as floods hit southwestern Colorado

Southwestern Colorado flooding destroys homes and strands residents
Only the roof and chimney remain of a home shown in Olivia Young's report from Pagosa Springs. Elsewhere, the Colorado National Guard deploys a Black Hawk helicopter to rescue two people stranded in an RV.
CBS Colorado's coverage follows floodwaters through southwestern Colorado, where rushing water overtakes neighborhood streets and overwhelms sandbags. Officials describe the flooding as catastrophic and worse than the flooding that devastated the region a year earlier. Gov. Jared Polis has extended a disaster emergency declaration.
At a fishing lodge beside the Rio Grande, Eddie Anderson describes water flowing beneath a deck that normally sits well back from the river. "So we're part of the river," he says.
Another resident speaks from her car about a road closure that has left no way in or out. Her account gives the damage a practical dimension: even people whose homes remain standing can find themselves stranded.
The short report drew about 46,000 views before its first full day, far beyond the roughly two thousand usual for the station's Shorts.
Young closes with some relief: water levels have begun to recede, and community relief efforts are underway. But the report's images of washed-away property and impassable roads show what residents still face after the peak.
