Learjet crash debris crashes through woman's roof as NTSB finds tail pieces nearly 4 miles away
"Important pieces of the aircraft separated before the impact," NTSB board member Tom Chapman says in WPBF 25 News's update on the fatal Learjet crash near West Palm Beach.
That finding moves the investigation beyond the impact site in Greenacres. Reporter Terri Parker says pieces of the plane's tail were discovered nearly four miles away. The report also shows debris that pierced Anna Escobar's roof and landed in her kitchen, bringing the crash's consequences inside a nearby home.
Nine people died when the Learjet 60 crashed on Sunday. Following its earlier reporting on the victims and displaced residents, WPBF turns here to the scattered wreckage and what investigators hope to learn from it.
Chapman explains that the elevator controls the aircraft's pitch, moving its nose up and down. Finding that it had separated provides an important direction for the investigation, he says. The report does not establish what caused that separation.
The update reached about 182,000 views in its first 12 hours, far beyond the station's usual audience for short uploads. WPBF's separate upload, "NTSB news conference", also drew an unusually large audience for its regular-length videos.
Parker closes with a practical request for anyone who finds possible wreckage: call the sheriff's office, leave it untouched and wait for authorities. Investigators are also seeking dashcam footage.
The National Transportation Safety Board is an independent U.S. federal agency that investigates civil transportation accidents, including aviation crashes.
