The Backyard Scientist's fish, and William Osman's free embroidery software
A day-old video tagging Kevin Kohler's channel passed 160,000 views in eleven hours, after a week built around a tool that turns pictures into stitches.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
we need to talk about this guy's fish
Two uploads, two very different moods. William Osman's second channel spent most of the week on "giving everything away for free," a project that, judging by the comment section, involves embroidery software he made and handed out at no cost, with Anthropic's Claude in the sponsor's chair. It opened with roughly a quarter of a million views on its first day and has since passed 350,000.
The comments are worth the scroll. People who digitize designs for a living showed up to talk shop: one has spent years in embroidery and paid over a thousand dollars for software, another says the intro landed while their machine was running, and several point out how hard gradients are to get right. Others connect it to William's past adventures, joking that he has moved from farming to fashion, and Cameraman John, the channel's long-running background figure, has a small club of devoted admirers asking for the shirt.
Then, on Monday, came "we need to talk about this guy's fish," its description a single tag: @TheBackyardScientist, the channel of Kevin Kohler, known for oversized backyard experiments with molten metal and water. It is moving far faster than anything else here, about 160,000 views in eleven hours.
The channel as a whole is drawing well below its usual daily pace, and subscribers held level over the week. Among the DIY and building channels near its size, it sits in the middle for views gained, while Fab Rats, with its flood-rescue tow truck, ran far ahead of its own normal.
And the slower burner is still earning: "Pro's wanted $20,000 so I did it myself," sixteen days old, has passed 1.2 million views.
