Eryn Bonner's arrest in Tempe, and a debate over police accountability on TYT Sports
Rick Strom's video on the Arizona State cheerleader drew nearly seven times the comments of a usual first day, most of them about what should happen next.
Why this story? The video drew 1,190 comments in its first day, 6.8 times a normal first day on this channel (176).
Violent Arrest of College Cheerleader Sparks Firestorm of Backlash
Eryn Bonner, a cheerleader at Arizona State, is in a video that has spread far beyond campus. It shows her being arrested by a police officer in Tempe, the city where the university has its main campus. On TYT Sports, Rick Strom's "Violent Arrest of College Cheerleader Sparks Firestorm of Backlash" goes through the footage and the response to it. As the description puts it, activists and creators online are calling for the officer to be fired and for the misdemeanor charges Bonner faces to be dropped.
The video drew around 77,000 views in its first day, an ordinary start for this channel. The comment section was another matter: about 1,190 comments in those 24 hours, close to seven times what a regular video here usually gets.
Most of that conversation is about accountability. Many viewers ask for the officer's dismissal and an inquiry into the department. Others bring up police training and qualified immunity, and some ask whether settlements should come out of police pensions instead of public money. Several viewers from outside the United States compare it with how policing feels where they live, and a number of them doubt that anything will change.
The channel usually sits where sports meets politics, and in the two days after this video it moved on to Jack Hughes and an ESPN reporter's joke, and to Irish protesters at Donald Trump's golf resort.
