Todd Field has a straightforward endorsement for the Strand in Rockland, Maine: "This is my favorite theater in America." Turner Classic Movies gives him company in "The Strand Theatre | Still Now Showing | TCM," bringing together host Alicia Malone and the people who keep the place running.

The short documentary opens with Field remembering a conversation with Tom Cruise after shooting Eyes Wide Shut about moving to Rockland. Malone describes her own move from Los Angeles to Maine, then shares her moviegoing routine at the Strand. Between their memories comes the theater's longer story: Jo Dondis explains that her grandparents built it, while executive director Anne Rogers-Popejoy considers how to preserve its historic character without losing its relevance.

The week's sole new upload drew roughly 4,200 views. Its comments became a small collection of theater memories: viewers describe classic-film Mondays, a demolished hometown Strand and a community-supported cinema in Washington. The subject reaches beyond this one screen.

Elsewhere, Stanley Kubrick supplies the strongest daily momentum. The Plot Thickens episode about his difficult Spartacus production is the busiest of the highlighted older uploads, followed by the installment tracing Dr. Strangelove's transformation of nuclear anxiety into comedy. There is a neat connection here: Field acted in Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut before making films including Tár.

Across the catalog, TCM collected about 820,000 views and added subscribers over the week; daily viewing is modestly above its usual pace. Nearby network channels had varied weeks, with Law & Order drawing a particularly large weekly audience and The Chi quieter than usual. TCM's new contribution was smaller and distinctly local: a portrait of the people who make going to the movies possible.

What viewers say

  • Local theaters are treasures. We have one that programs classic films on Mondays. Going there tonight, I love supporting what they do and seeing others enjoy these movies makes them feel like a brand new experience.

  • Todd Field's spot on, it is hard to talk about movies we love without getting sentimental, but that's the beauty of the art form. As a film fan, I embrace it.

  • Thank you for posting this movie. We had a Strand theatre in town, but it was demolished in the early 80s.

  • It´s heartwarming to see how a movie theater from 1923 can still bring so many generations together and keep the soul of a community alive. Stories like this give you hope for the future of cinema.

  • The community of Mount Vernon, WA came together to save and refurbish our art deco era theater, the Lincoln. My husband and I were able to sit in one of the loveseats when we saw our first movie there. He would remember which movie it was, I don't. The Lincoln is still community supported and a treasure. We have live performances as well as movie viewing.
