"I guess the way I would respond is, examine the facts?" That is Strauss Zelnick, chief executive of Take-Two Interactive, answering a Wall Street Journal interviewer who has just suggested that Grand Theft Auto is his company's one big hit. In "Well That Interview Was Trash," Charlie spends most of nine minutes on why that question went so wrong.
The exchange took place on a WSJ tech stage ahead of GTA 6's release. "I think there is a concern that this is your big hit, and that you don't have enough hits in your library," the interviewer says, then asks how he would knock that concern down. Charlie freezes on Zelnick's face and calls it "the apotheosis of delusional interviews." He also reaches for gamer vocabulary: "She hit him with an AOE debuff. Everyone out there's taking tick damage."
The problem with the premise is the size of the shelf behind it. Take-Two owns Rockstar Games, which makes both GTA and Red Dead Redemption, along with the 2K label. Zelnick's full reply appears on screen, running through Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, NBA 2K, WWE 2K, BioShock, Borderlands and Civilization.
Then Charlie changes rooms. At Comic-Con, an IGN interviewer greets Zach Cregger, there as the director of a Resident Evil film, with one line after another from Resident Evil 4's Merchant. "What are you buying?" Eventually Cregger asks, "What am I supposed to say to this?" Charlie rates that one as the longer and more excruciating of the two.
It arrives at the end of a crowded few days on the channel, after videos on the EDP445 arrest and a Scientology dispute on his street. In the comments, many viewers note the novelty of finding themselves on a CEO's side, and plenty simply list the games the question forgot.
