"Donald Trump's whole immigration agenda is Stephen Miller," Katy Tur says. Now Miller has the office that runs the whole White House.
Tur opens by reading Trump's Truth Social post. Susie Wiles, the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff, is moving to the president's political operation. Miller, who has been deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser since 2025, takes her place. The announcement comes days after midterm results that went heavily against the president's party, and every guest frames the appointment against that backdrop.
Paula Reid, MS NOW's chief White House reporter, says senior officials were bracing for the shift even before the vote. Their worry, she explains, was what would happen inside the building, given Miller's history of clashing with administration lawyers over aggressive policies. Later she goes further. Trump has stepped back from day-to-day governing, she argues, which leaves Miller with outsized reach across key departments: "And this is now really the Stephen Miller administration." She adds that Miller has become more skilled at pushing executive orders through objections from career government attorneys.
Scott MacFarlane, chief Washington correspondent at MeidasTouch, sees a White House preparing for a fight with a Congress already targeting ICE funding. "Everything about this feels like a double down," he says. Kevin Baron, former executive editor of Defense One, sets the choice beside Pete Hegseth's combative messaging.
David Rohde, MS NOW's senior national security reporter, points to public disapproval of the administration's immigration tactics. "Bluntly, the president is not listening to voters," he says, and he reports hearing that Hegseth may also be replaced.
The panel drew close to a million views in its first eight hours, far ahead of a usual MS NOW segment and the fastest start in a busy stretch for the channel. A shorter clip of the same announcement also moved quickly, as did Peter Alexander's reporting that frustrated White House aides are looking for the exits.
