Mississippi Senate count turns to provisional ballots
NBC News' Yamiche Alcindor reports from Jackson as Scott Colom holds a narrow edge over Cindy Hyde-Smith and Republicans prepare challenges.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 200,061 views a day, 17 times a normal first day on this channel (11,990).
Mississippi Senate race still neck-and-neck
Scott Colom says the close result isn't a surprise to him. "I knew we were competitive. I wasn't surprised," the Democratic Senate candidate tells reporters in NBC News' dispatch from Mississippi, where provisional ballots are still being processed.
Yamiche Alcindor's report, filmed in Jackson on November 5, shows election workers checking ballots while the Senate contest remains too close to call. Its results graphic puts Colom barely ahead of Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith, with neither candidate reaching half the vote.
The Short drew an estimated 200,000 views in its first day, roughly seventeen times NBC News' usual start for that format. The report brings viewers to the ballot-processing center rather than offering a declaration of victory.
Alcindor reports that Republicans are preparing challenges. Mississippi Republican Party chairman Mike Hurst pledges that election laws will be followed and every legal vote counted. The report also returns to voters' concerns about the economy and healthcare, the issues behind the unresolved tally.
NBC's longer Mississippi coverage adds another dimension: Colom's criticism of his own party. In a separate interview covered on Meet the Press NOW, the candidate says Democrats did not invest enough in making Mississippi competitive. That upload also drew an unusually large first-day audience, as did Alcindor's longer report on both camps preparing for a possible legal dispute over the count.
