Bonfire Night 2026: Police van torched and staff injured in night of unrest | 5 News
5 News reporter Alan Jenkins follows the aftermath of Scotland's Bonfire Night disorder from a burned-out police van in Glasgow to firework control zones in Edinburgh. A police officer and an ambulance worker were hurt, and firefighters also came under attack, the report says.
Footage from social media shows fireworks striking the van in north Glasgow before it is engulfed in flames. Jenkins then visits streets scattered with used firework casings and remnants of fires, where residents call for restrictions on public access to fireworks.
Police reported seven arrests across the central belt. In Edinburgh's Oxgangs area, bonfires and bins were used as blockades, while police and members of the public were targeted with fireworks.
Chief Superintendent David Robertson condemns the attacks but makes an important distinction about the wider operation: "We saw far fewer instances of really serious disorder."
The report has drawn around 36,000 views in nine hours, running well ahead of the usual opening pace for a 5 News Short.
Jenkins also examines the local response beyond policing. A sign in Edinburgh warns that lighting fireworks within a designated control zone is an offence during the stated restriction period. Council leader Jane Meagher supports extending that approach where residents want it: "I would like to see control zones where the local communities really want them."

The numbers
The Bonfire Night report is drawing views far faster than a typical 5 News Short. Its projected first-day total is an estimate, not a completed day's count.
