His appeal was refused. Vickrum Digwa had sought to challenge his sentence as excessive, but the Court of Appeal instead increased the minimum term of his life sentence from 21 years to 25.
Delivering the judgment, Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr set out why the original punishment for murdering Henry Nowak was unduly lenient. Nowak, an 18-year-old student, was fatally stabbed in Southampton while walking home after a gathering in December 2025.
The Daily Record's upload opens with the ruling, then presents the court's detailed reasoning. Carr describes the repeated stabbing, Digwa's taunts and his filming of Nowak as he lay dying. The judgment also recounts his false account of racial abuse and the concealment of the weapon.
The court weighed Digwa's age, previous good character and lack of premeditation against those aggravating features. It rejected his application to appeal and granted the Attorney General's referral challenging the original term.
The recording is drawing views at more than ten times the Daily Record's usual first-day pace for regular videos. Its closing words return to the family rather than the legal arguments. Carr says: "It has been a very difficult day for everyone, and nothing that anybody can say can ever bring Henry back to his family."
