Michael Mullins was cycling home from the school where he had worked for 17 years when Simon Richardson hit him with his car. Daily Record's sentencing video moves from the judge's assessment of the murder to a police officer's appeal to keep Mullins's life and legacy in view.
Richardson dragged the Stretford Grammar School headteacher beneath his Volvo for more than a mile. Mrs Justice Brunner sentenced him to life imprisonment, setting a minimum term of 25 years, with time already spent in custody deducted.
"I regard your culpability as extremely high," the judge tells Richardson. The footage includes her consideration of his previous driving offences and flight from police, followed by her rejection of mitigation concerning premeditation and remorse. The sentence itself comes just after four and a half minutes.
The upload drew about 39,000 views in its first 11 hours, already far beyond the channel's usual full-day audience for regular videos.
Outside court, Detective Sergeant Trisha Solomon praises the conduct of Mullins's family and thanks the bystanders who tried to help him. She describes him as a kind man, then closes with a direct request: "Finally, I'd like you all to remember Michael. Do not remember the offender who's been found guilty of his murder."
