Elon Musk's campaign spending gives Michael Kosta his big financial story. Troy Iwata has a smaller, more personal accounting problem: he has already spent the money he expected Donald Trump to send him.
Those two versions of election-night economics anchor The Daily Show's satirical midterm recap, which drew roughly 2.7 million views since yesterday. Kosta hosts from the desk, celebrating Democratic gains before turning to the people trying to explain Republican losses.
A news montage supplies the congressional results and unexpected Democratic victories in South Carolina, Texas and Kansas. Kosta also takes aim at television coverage's seemingly inexhaustible supply of phrases beginning with "blue."
Then comes Musk. A news clip reports hundreds of millions of dollars spent backing Republican candidates who largely lost, which Kosta rounds into a half-billion-dollar punchline: "Poor Elon. Half a billion dollars and absolutely nothing to show for it." His next target is conservative media's search for explanations, including Alex Jones's suggestion that Trump was secretly working for Democrats.
The closing exchange is an explicitly comic correspondent routine, not a report about Iwata's finances. Stationed outside the White House, he keeps bringing Kosta back to a supposed $5,000 Trump payment: "Are we still getting that $5,000?"
Kosta wants to discuss the consequences of the election. Iwata wants to discuss an extravagant purchase involving Justin Timberlake's famous denim outfit. The host has trouble getting his correspondent's attention back to foreign policy.
