Jimmy “interviews” #Trump about last night’s midterm results. #FallonTonight
Jimmy Fallon holds a clipboard and gives his supposed guest an easy opening: "Mr. Trump, thank you for joining us. So, did it go well last night?" A cut to Donald Trump supplies the answer: "Not even a little bit."
This is not an actual interview. The Tonight Show has edited archived news and rally footage into replies to Fallon's questions, creating a fictional exchange about the midterm results. Fallon plays the interviewer straight while the cuts make Trump's answers veer away from the questions.
The Short passed a million views, with its estimated first-day audience roughly forty-five times the show's usual start for that format. The premise is more specific than a collection of verbal stumbles: Fallon asks what message voters sent, what went right and what Trump would say to Hispanic voters. That last question cues footage of Trump reading Spanish from a teleprompter. Ohio politician Jon Husted also becomes the subject of a question.
The mock interview was part of a broader election-comedy burst for the show. A separate Capitol joke also drew an unusually large audience for a Short, while Fallon's longer monologue tackled Trump's response to Democratic victories, his insistence that Republicans would have won with him on the ballot, and his posted "VETO" hat.
