Jimmy Fallon gives his midterms poem a Trump interruption
A storybook reading becomes a rally-clip comedy sketch, drawing far more views than the Tonight Show's usual Shorts.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 383,642 views a day, 16 times a normal first day on this channel (23,620).
‘Twas the night before the midterms… #FallonTonight
Jimmy Fallon holds a large book and starts reading in a familiar bedtime rhythm. Then Donald Trump interrupts: "I love the meat! Ahh!"
That is the setup for "'Twas the night before the midterms… #FallonTonight," a Tonight Show sketch that borrows the cadence of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" and replaces the seasonal anticipation with election anxiety. Fallon supplies the rhymes; edited clips of Trump's rally speeches supply the interruptions.
The Short drew about 380,000 views in its first day, roughly sixteen times the channel's usual first-day audience for the format. It gives Fallon's election comedy a specific new wrapper: a book-in-hand reading in which each cutaway breaks the storybook mood.
As Fallon works through ballot issues, approval ratings and predictions about Congress, the clips veer elsewhere. Trump lists a lion, a bear, a snake and a camel; another interruption consists of the name Nicki Minaj. The joke lies in the edit, not an impersonation.
The poem wasn't the show's only unusually widely watched election upload. Fallon's longer monologue also drew well above its usual first-day audience, addressing Trump's statement that he would become "Mr. Veto" if Democrats won the midterms and his speech at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
