What do you buy after catching a million-dollar barramundi? For Matthew Mokany, the list starts with a boat for his mother and a house for himself. Giving up work, though, doesn't seem to be on it.

Asked by ABC News' Danny New why he had shown up to work despite the windfall, the Australian mechanic gives a short answer: "I like my job."

Good Morning America's report, "Lucky fisherman catches fish worth $1M", drew about 140,000 views in its first 17 hours, far beyond the channel's usual start for a Short. The catch is extraordinary, but the calls home give the report its most personal moments.

Mokany was fishing at night with his younger brother when his head torch revealed a bright red tag hanging from the fish. It was part of the Northern Territory's Million Dollar Fish contest, which awards prizes for specially tagged barramundi. He initially thought he had caught one of the smaller prizes and was already delighted, before learning it was the million-dollar fish.

His mother, Carolyn, screams when he tells her. Mokany asks her not to go into the pub and announce it just yet. His father takes more convincing, initially treating the news as a practical joke.

Carolyn taught her son to fish, and the boat he was using that night belonged to her. That makes the first item on his shopping list more than a celebratory purchase: it's a return gift for the person who got him started.
