Ports, mods and AI: 'This Is A Nightmare For The Gaming Industry' on Spawn Wave

The week's most watched upload passed 157,000 views, and its comment section turned into one long argument about companies, AI and who gets called a thief.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Among the gaming news channels close to Spawn Wave in size, only Luke Stephens added more views over the past seven days. That is a friendly place to stand, even in a week when the channel as a whole ran at about half its usual daily pace. Infinite Bits, its nearest neighbor by size, slowed down in much the same way, while LegacyKillaHD went the other direction and is having a far busier stretch than normal.

Eleven uploads went out, most of them editions of News Wave, the channel's daily roundup of leaks, ratings and rumors. The one that drew the most viewers stepped outside that format. "This Is A Nightmare For The Gaming Industry" looks at the flood of fan ports and mods going around online. The roundup from the day before had already covered Halo being ported to web browsers and a 3DS port that pushes the handheld to its limits. Viewers took the subject somewhere else: many of them read the whole thing as AI coming back to bite the companies that pushed it, and some see these decompiled classics as a kind of shelter against an all-digital future. One recurring joke gives the old "THIS IS AN XBOX" line a new meaning.

The newest News Wave is the one moving fastest now. It covers GTA VI getting its M rating, reports that Sony is taking pitches for legacy franchises, and Ubisoft and Capcom both drawing attention over AI. Close behind is "I Asked Gamers One Simple Question…", which the description says goes against the grain on social media. Subscribers barely moved, about a thousand over the week.
