Japan's biggest flea market keeps The Retro Future hunting through a pause
The 82-day-old trip in search of cheap retro gaming grails has passed 680,000 views, with nothing new posted since.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Retro Hunting In Japan's Biggest Flea Market
On an ordinary day The Retro Future draws somewhere around 34,000 views. Right now it is closer to half that, which is about what a channel looks like when nothing new has gone up for a week, and nothing has.
What people are still watching is Japan. The channel spent its summer driving around the country with a friend, hunting for old consoles and handhelds, and three episodes from that trip carry the load. The busiest is "Retro Hunting In Japan's Biggest Flea Market", nearly three months old, in which the hunt goes through a huge Tokyo market looking for retro grails at junk prices. The tags point at the usual suspects: Game Boys, Famicoms, DS and 3DS handhelds, and the occasional fake.
Right behind it is the newest of the three, "I Hit The Jackpot While Retro Hunting In Japan", 18 days old. The description says the find was just sitting on a shelf, and calls it some of the best stuff of the whole trip. A visit to remote villages from August rounds out the set, and it has quietly gathered the most views of the three, close to 700,000.
The channel added about a thousand subscribers over the week. Among the gaming channels near its size, only one gained fewer views, while LegacyKillaHD ran several times above its usual pace and Secret Castle Toys and Games kept its outsized numbers. For The Retro Future, the summer in Japan is still the whole story.
