The Retro Future's Japan hunt turns up a Game Boy puzzle
A chance Hard-Off discovery brings another authenticity question as the channel's daily views climb to more than five times their usual pace.
Why this story? The whole channel is running at 151,831 views a day, 5.5 times a normal day (27,651).
Elliot Coll wasn't looking for this particular Hard-Off. The Retro Future's latest Japan outing began with the accidental discovery of a store that, according to his description, had opened late last year. Inside was a Game Boy Advance SP he describes as extremely rare, with one important complication: is it genuine?
That is the hook of "Retro Hunting In The BEST Hard-Off In Japan", which has reached roughly 157,000 views since its October 13 release. Alongside it, the channel is having an unusually busy day, drawing about 152,000 views across its catalog, more than five times its usual daily pace. Those are channel-wide views, not all visits to the new hunt.
Coll's recent uploads have taken the search beyond Tokyo into rural Japan, with secondhand shelves supplying both discoveries and doubts. September's "I Hit The Jackpot While Retro Hunting In Japan" centered on an unexpected shelf find during a driving trip with a friend.
The uncertainty over this SP also echoes a more personal purchase. In August's "Did I Get Scammed Buying My Dream Game Boy", Coll questioned the authenticity of a handheld he had wanted since childhood. Finding the right console and knowing it is real are two different parts of his collecting story.
