Shark teeth, obsidian and the macuahuitl: Skallagrim on fragile weapons that still bite
A week after his one-way weapons video, which has passed 1.8 million views, Skall turned to Aztec and Hawaiian clubs that break easily and wound badly.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
These Accidents with Blades Can Teach You Something
Can a weapon that shatters still be worth carrying? Skallagrim's newest video, "The Hidden Benefit of Fragile Weapons in History," says yes, with a catch. It looks at shark-tooth clubs from Hawaii and the obsidian-edged macuahuitl of the Aztecs, and the description hints at one especially nasty reason a brittle edge was dangerous anyway. Skall draws on tests and builds by other makers for it, including Paleoman Jim's own macuahuitl.
It is the second of two uploads. The first, "These Accidents with Blades Can Teach You Something," is a snarky reaction to sword mishaps: a ceiling light shattered by a flying blade, a katana meeting a television. He brings his armed martial arts practice to it and explains how each could have been avoided. It has passed a quarter of a million views.
The video with the most pull, though, is nine days old. "History's One-Way Weapons: Ingenious!" covers the Roman pilum, Arab and Saracen archery manuals and the small Korean pyeonjeon arrow shot through a guide. It has gone past 1.8 million views and is still drawing more daily views than both new uploads combined.
The channel as a whole is running somewhat slower than usual. That is also true of several neighbors in the military and weapons group, The Tank Museum and Military Arms Channel among them. TAOFLEDERMAUS and sootch00 are busier than normal. Skallagrim stays fourth by subscribers among the nine channels nearest his size, close behind TAOFLEDERMAUS and T.REX ARMS.

The pilum, one of history's one-way weapons, was a throwing spear used by which army?
The pilum was the standard heavy javelin of Roman legionaries, built so its shank bent and enemies could not throw it back.
