Mỹ Lai, the Boer Wars and the Great Northern War, with nothing new posted

Griffin Johnsen's animated history channel took the week off, and its newest film, an account of the 1968 massacre built on three book-length studies, passed 350,000 views.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Among the military and geopolitics channels nearest The Armchair Historian in size, TAOFLEDERMAUS and Yarnhub are having the big stretch, each drawing several times its usual daily views. Forgotten Weapons is close to its normal pace, and The Armchair Historian sits sixth of nine by subscribers, at around two and a half million.

Nothing new went up this week, so the attention went to the films already there. The busiest is "Mỹ Lai Massacre," posted eleven days ago. Its description lists the sources behind it: William Thomas Allison's study from Johns Hopkins University Press, Michael Bilton and Kevin Sim's Four Hours In My Lai, and Howard Jones's history of the events of 1968. It is the kind of subject the channel treats seriously rather than as spectacle, and it is drawing more daily views than anything else in its catalog.

Behind it is "Boer Wars (Full Documentary)," two months old and past 600,000 views. Its reading list runs from Osprey's illustrated volumes to Ruth Fry's 1929 memoir of Emily Hobhouse, the British campaigner who exposed conditions in the camps of the second war.

Further back, and moving more gently, is "The Great Northern War," four months on the channel and past 400,000 views. Three conflicts, three centuries, and Johnsen's animated maps hold all of them together.
