Don’t threaten Woody Harrelson's dog | Seven Psychopaths

A gunman starts counting down, and Woody Harrelson's character has an unusual request: could he go back to five?

The small white dog caught in the middle is the reason this Seven Psychopaths confrontation can't proceed like an ordinary movie standoff. Harrelson's gangster is fiercely protective of his pet, even while the humans around him are armed and increasingly irritated.

SBS On Demand's excerpt, titled "Don't threaten Woody Harrelson's dog | Seven Psychopaths", reached about 50,000 views in its first 19 hours. That's already far beyond the channel's usual first day for a Short.

The scene distils the peculiar priorities of Martin McDonagh's 2012 crime comedy: a threat to life becomes an argument, then an argument about how to conduct the threat. An orange flare gun supplies the menace; Harrelson's plea to restart the countdown supplies the absurdity.

Viewers are asking which film they're watching and trying to place the familiar faces. One recognises the gunman, Sam Rockwell, from The Green Mile.

SBS On Demand has also posted Christopher Walken's refusal to be intimidated and a scene about a screenplay partnership reaching breaking point. The dog-hostage clip sits alongside both, another encounter where these characters make a dangerous situation unnecessarily complicated.
