Dublin's transport restrictions will begin before the European leaders arrive. From Tuesday 10 to Friday 13 November, passengers should expect rerouted buses, delays and road closures as the capital prepares for meetings linked to Ireland's EU presidency, according to Ireland's public broadcaster RTÉ News.
The report shows police and workers inspecting drains and securing street poles. Around 50 European leaders are expected, with Gardaí, Ireland's national police service, describing the security operation as unprecedented in scale.
Superintendent Liam Geraghty warns that the effects will extend beyond the immediate meeting venue: "There will be very significant traffic disruptions in Dublin city centre and on the wider city at times." Motorcades will add to the disruption.
Reporting from North Wall Quay beside the Convention Centre Dublin, correspondent Samantha Libreri says the Samuel Beckett Bridge will close from Wednesday for three days. North Wall Quay is also among the roads facing closures, while the Luas Red Line tram service will be curtailed.
Jennifer Gilna, head of communications at the National Transport Authority, urges passengers to check their journeys beforehand: "We need all passengers to plan their journey in advance and allow additional time for all travel."
The restrictions overlap with two Niall Horan concerts at the nearby 3Arena on Thursday and Friday. Libreri highlights that concertgoers, as well as commuters, will have to navigate the combination of road closures and reduced tram service.
Ireland holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. The role passes between national governments every six months and involves chairing Council meetings and setting agendas.
