Gold shoulder pads and pizza feet: Riot reimagines Viego for League Classic
A two-month-old Super Art Power Hour episode, with a senior animator and a tech artist sending The Ruined King back a decade, is the corporate channel's busiest video.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Riot Artists Imagine Viego in League Classic - Super Art Power Hour Ep. 14
On most days the official Riot Games channel draws a little over 20,000 views across its whole catalog. This week it ran somewhat above that, and almost none of the lift came from anything new.
The one fresh upload was a short look at Riftbound point trackers, tagged for Life at Riot and Riot Careers. Riftbound is the studio's League of Legends trading card game. It drew a few thousand views and a couple of cheerful comments from people who want one.
The video still pulling viewers is episode 14 of Super Art Power Hour, now past 160,000 views. The premise is a "prework": Viego arrived in League in 2021, so senior animator Einar Langfjord and tech artist JP Putnam ask what he would have looked like in the game's early days. Out go the form-fitting black outfit and the teal ghost glow. In come gaudy gold shoulder pads, pizza feet and painted-on abs. Across nearly an hour the pair walk through rigging, skin weighting and a run cycle, and at one point the animators act the moves out themselves. The description is careful to add that this Viego will never actually ship.
Further down sits Marc Merrill, Riot's co-founder, talking about the studio's MMO at PAX West.
Among game publishers of similar size, Total War is having the biggest week by far. Rocket League Esports is also running ahead of its usual pace, while Sea of Thieves and Bungie are quieter than normal. Riot added about a thousand subscribers.
