DOJ to Washington: Set aside alleged noncitizen ballots
Washington's secretary of state is reviewing a federal demand to set aside ballots from more than 400 voters whose citizenship the Trump administration has questioned, PBS NewsHour reports.
In the Short, Geoff Bennett lays out the request, followed by a press-conference statement from Neil Floyd, the acting U.S. attorney for the Western District of Washington. Floyd says the people identified registered and voted despite not being citizens. That is the Justice Department's allegation, not a finding announced by state election officials in the report.
Bennett contrasts the department's suggestion that the cases represent a much larger problem with evidence that noncitizen voting is exceedingly rare. He also places Washington alongside an earlier effort in California and a separate legal challenge in Alaska, making this the administration's third intervention in ballot counting or certification this month.
The report has drawn roughly 62,000 views in nine hours, well ahead of the channel's usual start for a Short. Its closing distinction concerns authority: counting and certifying votes are responsibilities assigned to state and local election officials under state and federal law.
The U.S. federal department responsible for enforcing federal laws and administering justice. It is led by the attorney general, who reports to the president.
