Who is ahead in the race to follow Ron DeSantis into the governor's office? According to the exclusive Florida Poll that NBC 6 ran with its sister station Telemundo 51, it is the Republican, Byron Donalds, with a seven-point lead over the Democrat, David Jolly, less than a month before the November election.
The report, presented by NBC 6's Julia Bagg, is a few minutes of polling news, the kind of upload that usually passes quietly on a local station's channel. This one passed 77,000 views in its first 13 hours, far beyond what the station's regular-length videos usually manage in a full day.
The comment section moved even faster. A typical first day here brings about a dozen comments; this report had well over twenty times that before it was a day old. Most of the talk is the race itself, argued from both sides: the two candidates, Donalds' ties to Washington, and the money behind his campaign. Mixed in are practical questions, such as when early voting starts and who actually conducted the survey.
The matchup has its own back story. Donalds is a Republican congressman from Southwest Florida, while Jolly once held a Tampa Bay-area House seat as a Republican before leaving the party and running for governor as a Democrat.
The poll was not the channel's only busy upload. A Short on Christa Pike, the Tennessee death-row inmate who survived a failed lethal injection, also ran well ahead of the station's usual start for its Shorts. Yet the channel's overall daily views sat below its normal pace, which makes a single political report carrying this much of the day stand out all the more.
