A boy's escape through a closet wall ends in a 40-year sentence in Coweta County
FOX 5 Atlanta's Short on the child cruelty case drew hundreds of comments within hours, most of them asking who else knew.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 161,889 views a day, 30 times a normal first day on this channel (5,491).
Trapped child claws through sheetrock to flee
The Short is less than a minute of local court news, and its title carries most of it: "Trapped child claws through sheetrock to flee."
The case comes from Coweta County, southwest of Atlanta. According to the video's description, prosecutors laid out their evidence after a woman pleaded guilty to severe child cruelty charges. The boy at the center of the case had been locked in a closet. He got out by tearing through the sheetrock with his fingers, then jumped from a second-story window. The woman was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
The station posts Shorts like this most days, and they usually pass quietly. This one reached about 64,000 views in its first seven hours, on pace for a first day roughly thirty times the channel's norm. The comments came even faster than the views. In those seven hours there were more than a dozen times as many as a FOX 5 Short usually collects in a full day.
Most of the comments ask the same questions: who else knew about the abuse, and whether child protective services were ever involved. The video does not answer either one.
