Federal charges for nearly two dozen in an Atlanta gang, gun and drug case
FOX 5 Atlanta's report from the ATF briefing drew far more viewers than its own DeKalb County version of the same story, and a comment section that usually barely stirs filled up.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 155,405 views a day, 37 times a normal first day on this channel (4,160).
Feds announce major gang, gun & drug bust in Atlanta | FO X5 News
FOX 5 Atlanta carried the joint press briefing at the ATF's Atlanta Field Division, where federal law enforcement leaders announced indictments against nearly two dozen people. Officials tied the defendants to a gang they call the Goodfellas and said the charges cover illegal firearms trafficking and drug dealing.
New reports on the station's channel usually open with a few thousand views. This one passed 85,000 in its first nine hours. The station posted the case twice that day: a second report, framed around DeKalb County, described 20 people charged and some 1,500 guns that authorities say were stolen from shipping facilities in Conley and Macon. That version drew a fraction of the audience. The two together helped push the channel's daily views to more than double their usual level.
The comments moved even faster than the views. A regular report here gathers two or so in a whole day; this one had more than two hundred within hours. Many are simple approval for the city. Others talk about the timing, a few weeks before Georgia's elections, and some local viewers write that word of the case had been going around for a while.
