Isaias in the Gulf? Valerie Mills weighs wind shear against the rain for FOX 13
The Tampa station's forecast points past its own viewers, toward the western Panhandle and Louisiana, and people along that coast showed up in the comments.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 201,110 views a day, 21 times a normal first day on this channel (9,717).
Tropical storm may form in Gulf
When Valerie Mills last appeared in these pages, the Atlantic was quiet and Isaias was simply the next name on the list, as we reported here. In her newest forecast for FOX 13 Tampa Bay, the name has a place on the map: a system in the Gulf that could become Tropical Storm Isaias by the end of the week.
Mills does not oversell it. The description sums up her case: a small window to strengthen, with wind shear across the northern Gulf and drier air working against it. She expects the likeliest impact from the western Florida Panhandle to the Louisiana coast, and she warns that the models will shift as the system drifts east before being tugged north. Either way, she says, Florida and the northeastern Gulf Coast should get plenty of rain.
That forecast drew about 130,000 views in its first eleven hours, on a channel where a new video usually ends its whole first day under 10,000. The comment section, which normally gathers a handful of replies, filled with dozens. Viewers check in from the Mississippi coast, someone in Panama City thinks back to Hurricane Michael, and several in dry corners of the state are openly hoping for the rain. Others wonder whether this could be the season's first hurricane.
The weather shared the day with grimmer news. Sheriff Grady Judd's press conference on Monday's deadly Polk County school bus crash, and a report that the driver is not expected to face criminal charges, also drew far more viewers than the station usually sees.
Many of the comments under the forecast end the same way: a thank-you addressed to Valerie by name.

For a local station's weather update, this is a start well outside the ordinary, and the comment count is just as unusual.
