Ft. Hood shooter to die by firing squad | FOX 7 Austin
Fort Hood sits a little over an hour's drive north of Austin, and few stories reach FOX 7's audience like this one. A Pentagon spokesman has said that President Trump approved execution by firing squad for former Army Maj. Nidal Hasan, convicted for the 2009 shooting at the base that killed 13 people. Julieanna Jackson reports the details in a short clip.
That clip drew more than 300,000 views in its first nine hours. For a station whose shorts usually open with about a thousand views on their first day, it is far outside the routine. The comment section moved even more sharply. The channel's shorts normally pass their first day with hardly a comment, and this one gathered close to 900 before its first evening was over.
Most of those comments return to time: the many years between the shooting and this decision, and what that wait has meant for the families of the 13. Several commenters say they are veterans. Others recall where they or their relatives were stationed when it happened.
The rest of the station's day was ordinary local news: a man found dead at a CapMetro bus stop, the cleanup of Zilker Park after a muddy first weekend of Austin City Limits, and a preview of a presidential rally in San Antonio. None of those uploads came close to this one.
