Christa Pike's emergency motion: a Tennessee hearing on evidence from her failed execution
East Idaho News carried the status conference in full, on the same day its Courtroom Insider team opened coverage of the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial in North Carolina.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 108,388 views a day, 26 times a normal first day on this channel (4,212).
Hearing for Christa Pike's emergency motion after failed execution attempt in Tennessee
A long live stream on East Idaho News usually ends its first day with a few thousand views. The recording of a short court session in Tennessee is on pace to finish its first day about twenty-five times higher than that, at roughly 100,000.
The session was a status conference on an emergency motion filed for Christa Pike after her execution attempt on September 30 failed. According to the video's description, the motion asks the court to preserve the evidence from that attempt. The newsroom is based in Idaho Falls, but much of its audience comes for its coverage of courtrooms in other states, and this one is a long way from Idaho.
Viewers who stayed with the stream point out that the court itself does not appear on screen until more than half an hour in. Several also mention that the sound makes parts of the hearing hard to follow.
The channel had more than one case running. Its live feed from the first day of Miguel Salguero-Olivares's murder trial in North Carolina also started well above usual. He is charged in the 2012 killing of Faith Hedgepeth, a 19-year-old UNC-Chapel Hill student, and has pleaded not guilty. That evening, a Courtroom Insider episode drew even more viewers than the Pike hearing. In it, host Nate Eaton turned first to Caleb Flynn's behavior at his sentencing and then to the Hedgepeth case with journalist Kelly McLear. The next episode opened with news that Pike is conscious and speaking.
