'Squeezed from every direction': Mark Bouris sits down with Louis Christopher and Tom Panos
A Straight Talk roundtable on falling prices, nervous buyers and the 'shrinking cake' passed 90,000 views in under a day, a week after the channel was talking cricket with Adam Gilchrist.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 103,165 views a day, 13 times a normal first day on this channel (7,672).
Property Experts: Why Australians Are Getting Squeezed From Every Direction
Where are Australian house prices going next? Louis Christopher of SQM Research has a blunt answer in Mark Bouris's newest Straight Talk roundtable. With prices already about seven percent below their national peak, the description says, he puts the odds of a further fall over the next six months at around eighty percent.
The hour-long conversation pulled in close to 93,000 views in its first 19 hours. A long video here usually ends its first day under 8,000. The week before belonged to cricket, with Bouris interviewing Adam Gilchrist about his career, and the most watched of those clips sits in the tens of thousands.
Bouris knows the subject from the inside. He built Wizard Home Loans before he became a familiar face on television. Here he sits between Christopher, the analyst, and Tom Panos, the Sydney auctioneer, who reports from the ground: buyers hesitating, first home buyers walking away, the Gold Coast falling hardest. From there the talk widens to recession risk, government spending, red tape and a fading Bank of Mum and Dad, and it ends with each guest's message to Canberra.
The idea that sticks is the "shrinking cake", the panel's image for a falling standard of living, and commenters have run with it, some rewriting it as a story about bakers and expensive flour. Others argue about whether a recession has already arrived. A few homeowners say outright that they would welcome lower prices. Panos gets his own share of the praise for keeping things clear.
Two short clips from the same table went up the same day and are still in the low thousands. The full episode is the one people are watching.
